The Latest On Beetroot Juice

Pooled data from numerous trials show beetroot juice can lift VO2max, peak power output and sprint performance, though the improvements are small to moderate rather than dramatic. The juice is rich in dietary nitrate, which bacteria in the mouth convert to nitrite before the body turns it into nitric oxide, widening blood vessels, improving oxygen delivery and letting muscles do the same work on less oxygen. Across the studies, the most common approach supplied around 6 to 8 mmol of nitrate.
