Does sleep affect muscle growth?

  1. A meta-analysis of 12 randomised trials in 179 team-sport athletes found early-afternoon napping produced a large improvement in endurance and a moderate gain in agility versus no nap, with naps longer than 60 minutes showing the biggest effects.

  2. A meta-analysis of 13 randomised trials found oropharyngeal (mouth-and-throat) muscle training and respiratory muscle training were associated with reductions in obstructive sleep apnoea severity, while conventional resistance training was not. Daytime sleepiness showed no consistent, clinically meaningful improvement with any modality.

  3. A meta-analysis of ten randomised trials in healthy adults found warm-water immersion thermotherapy increased total sleep time (SMD 0.63) and sleep efficiency (SMD 0.64), but did not significantly change sleep latency or any Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score.

  4. Tart cherry's polyphenols show promising evidence for easing muscle soreness and modestly improving sleep, which is why some athletes use it around competition rather than every day, since routinely blunting inflammation may dampen training adaptations.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 35 randomised trials in adults aged 50 and over links combined lifestyle measures, Mediterranean-style diet, aerobic and resistance exercise, cognitive engagement, social support, sleep and preventive care, with better ageing outcomes, including a 25% lower risk of cognitive decline with 7-8 hours of sleep.

    Review of 35 RCTs (~25,000 participants aged 50+), but it pools very different interventions and outcomes into single estimates, and some reported associations (notably on alcohol and sleep) read as observational and are loosely described in the abstract.

  6. A skin-attached patch that pairs focused ultrasound with overnight brainwave recording, aimed at the subthalamic nucleus, increased REM duration by 4.6% and reduced REM latency by 24% in a 28-participant study.

    One 28-participant registered study of a prototype device, reported by the engineering team that developed it and has filed a patent; the abstract gives no daytime outcomes, no safety data and no independent replication.
