Leg press

A machine squat pattern that lets you load the legs with a supported back.

What it is

A machine exercise where you press a weighted platform away with your legs from a seated or reclined position. It trains the squat pattern's muscles while supporting the spine, allowing heavy loading with less technical and balance demand.

Muscles worked

Primary: Quadriceps, Glutes. Secondary: Adductors, Hamstrings.

How to perform it

  1. Sit in the machine with your whole back and head supported, feet flat on the platform about shoulder-width.
  2. Release the safety catches and take the platform's weight with legs almost — but not fully — locked out.
  3. Lower the platform under control by bending the knees until your thighs approach your torso, without your lower back rounding off the pad.
  4. Press back up through the whole foot to just short of lockout, keeping tension on the legs.

Common form faults

  • Lowering so deep that the hips curl and the lower back lifts off the pad. Stop at the depth where the pelvis stays neutral against the pad; a slightly higher foot position can help.
  • Snapping the knees into full lockout under load. Stop just short of locking out to keep tension on the muscles and spare the knee joints.

Programming

A joint-friendly way to add quad and glute volume without the stability demand of a barbell squat. Usually trained 8–15 reps; a good option for pushing close to failure safely.

Is the leg press as good as squats?
It trains the same major muscles and lets you load them heavily with the back supported, which is great for volume and for people who struggle with barbell squats. Squats add more core, balance and whole-body carryover, so the two complement each other.
Where should I place my feet?
A higher, wider foot placement shifts more onto the glutes and hamstrings; a lower, closer one emphasises the quads. Keep your heels down and don't let the knees cave inward.
