Autophagy

The cell's recycling process that clears and reuses damaged components.

Autophagy, literally self eating, is the process by which a cell packages up its own damaged or surplus components and delivers them to the lysosome to be broken down and the parts reused. It is the major intracellular degradation system, and it runs continuously rather than switching on for special occasions.

It matters because quality control matters. Clearing damaged mitochondria and misfolded proteins is central to how cells stay functional, and impaired autophagy is implicated in neurodegenerative disease, and in ageing biology more broadly. The 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to work on its mechanisms, so the biology is not in doubt.

What is in doubt is the leap from that biology to a health claim about your Tuesday. Nutrient scarcity does upregulate autophagy, and most of what is known in detail comes from yeast, cell culture and rodents, where it can be measured directly. Measuring it in a living human is genuinely difficult, which is why the fasting literature reports weight, glucose and lipids rather than autophagy.

So the popular version, that a fast of some specific length switches on a beneficial cleanup at a known hour, is an extrapolation dressed as a protocol. No human outcome trial has shown that fasting improves health via autophagy, and the numbers quoted for when it begins are borrowed from animal work.

This does not make fasting pointless. Time restricted eating produces weight loss, mostly by shortening the window in which people eat, and if it suits your life it is a perfectly reasonable tool. It just does not need a cellular story to justify it.

Exercise also stimulates autophagy in animal models, which is worth knowing mainly because it makes the mechanism a poor argument for choosing fasting over training.

In practice, treat autophagy as real biology and a poor marketing claim: a reason to be interested in the research, not a reason to buy anything or skip breakfast on a schedule.
