EPOC, excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, is the elevated oxygen uptake that persists after exercise finishes. The body is restoring phosphocreatine, clearing metabolites, returning temperature and hormones towards baseline and repairing tissue, and all of that costs energy.
It is real and it is the origin of the afterburn effect that appears in marketing for interval and circuit training. What the marketing consistently misrepresents is the size.
Measured properly, EPOC typically accounts for something in the order of 6 to 15% of the energy used during the session itself, and the higher figures come from long or extremely intense efforts. A hard thirty minute session might add a few dozen calories rather than the hundreds often implied.
That means it does not change the arithmetic of fat loss in any meaningful way. Studies comparing interval and continuous training at matched energy expenditure find broadly similar fat loss, which is what you would expect if the afterburn were as modest as measurement suggests.
Intensity does raise it more than duration does, so hard intervals produce proportionally more EPOC than steady work of equal duration. Proportionally more of a small number is still a small number.
The legitimate reasons to do interval training are time efficiency and the aerobic adaptations that only high intensity produces. Those are good reasons and they do not need the afterburn to justify them.
