Your blood-sugar level after an overnight fast: a first-line metabolic marker.
Fasting glucose is the concentration of glucose in your blood after roughly eight hours without food, usually measured first thing in the morning. It is one of the oldest and most useful metabolic tests, and the diagnostic thresholds for diabetes are built on it.
It matters because it is a window on whether your glucose regulation is keeping up. In healthy physiology, insulin holds fasting glucose within a narrow band overnight. When insulin resistance develops, the pancreas compensates by producing more, and fasting glucose can stay normal for years while that compensation holds.
That is the limitation worth knowing. A normal fasting glucose does not rule out insulin resistance; it tells you the compensation is still working. Which is why HbA1c, giving an average over about three months, and sometimes fasting insulin, are read alongside it.
The number is also less stable than it looks. Poor sleep, illness, stress, recent heavy training and the dawn phenomenon, a normal early morning rise driven by hormones preparing you to wake, all move it. One reading is a snapshot in a system that moves.
It only means anything if the sample really was fasted. A glucose measured a few hours after eating cannot be read against fasting thresholds at all, and this is a common source of unnecessary alarm from private panels.
Diagnosis is never made on a single result, and interpretation belongs with a clinician. What is entirely reasonable to do yourself is to treat a drifting value as a prompt to look at the inputs that move it: weight, particularly around the middle, regular exercise, muscle mass, sleep and alcohol.

Most people reading this page are holding a blood-test report with this marker on it, and the question they arrived with is whether their number is normal. A reference interval says where most results from a healthy population fall; a guideline threshold is where a clinical body draws a line for a decision. Neither is a target, and a result on the wrong side of one is not a diagnosis: the same number can be unremarkable in one person and worth looking into in another, which is why the clinician who ordered the test reads it against your history rather than against a list.
