An exercise that moves a single joint to target one muscle.
An isolation exercise trains one muscle group across one joint: a biceps curl, a leg extension, a lateral raise, a calf raise. Compound exercises, by contrast, move several joints and recruit several muscle groups at once.
The case for compounds is efficiency. They train more tissue per set, allow heavier loads, and cover most of the body in a handful of movements, which is why almost every sensible programme is built on them.
The case for isolation is precision, and it is stronger than gym folklore allows. Compounds distribute work according to leverage and limb proportions rather than according to what you want trained, so a muscle can be a bystander in every big lift you do. Long arms and a bench press, or a deadlift where your lower back fails before your hamstrings, are the usual examples.
They are also gentler in ways that matter over a training life. Single joint work adds volume for a lagging muscle with far less systemic fatigue than another set of squats, which is why it is useful late in a session and during a diet when recovery is limited.
Rehabilitation relies on them heavily for the same reason: loading one structure in a controlled range is exactly what a healing tendon or a weak muscle needs, and a compound movement cannot deliver that specificity.
They are not a shortcut to spot reduction. Training a muscle harder does not remove fat from over it, which is a separate and much older misunderstanding.
