A contraction where the muscle produces force without changing length.

An isometric contraction is one where the muscle produces force without changing length and the joint does not move: a plank, a wall sit, holding the bottom of a squat, or pushing against something immovable.

It matters because force can be trained without movement, which makes it useful precisely when movement is the problem. Isometrics are a staple of early rehabilitation, because a joint that cannot yet tolerate a range of motion can often tolerate a static hold.

The adaptation is unusually specific to the angle trained. Strength gains concentrate around the joint position you held, spreading maybe fifteen to twenty degrees either side, which is why isometric-only programmes tend to leave gaps and why holds at several positions beat one favourite.

They have a real analgesic effect in tendon pain, at least in the short term, which is why they appear at the start of tendinopathy protocols. The longer term treatment is still progressive loading through range, so isometrics are the entry point rather than the destination.

They are also efficient in awkward circumstances: no equipment, no space, minimal soreness, and low fatigue cost. That makes them a reasonable option when travelling or when a joint is grumbling, and a poor substitute for loaded movement when neither is true.

One caution worth stating: holding a hard isometric while holding your breath raises blood pressure sharply, so keep breathing through them, particularly if your blood pressure is already high.

In practice, use them for rehabilitation, for positions you are weak in, and for pain relief in tendon problems, and build the rest of your training on movements that travel through a range.
