The highest rate your heart can beat during all-out effort.

Maximum heart rate is the fastest your heart is capable of beating during all-out effort. It is set mainly by age and individual genetics, declines by roughly a beat a year through adult life, and, this is the part that surprises people, is essentially unrelated to how fit you are. Training transforms how much blood your heart moves per beat and how low it sits at rest; it does not raise your ceiling. A very fit 50-year-old and a sedentary one may share a maximum, and the fit one will simply be doing far more work at every heart rate below it.

It matters because heart-rate training zones are almost always defined as percentages of it. Get the maximum wrong and every zone inherits the error, which is how people end up doing what they believe is easy aerobic work at an intensity that is quietly too hard, accumulating fatigue without the adaptation either intensity was meant to produce.

The familiar '220 minus age' has no serious derivation behind it. It emerged from a loose fit to existing data in the 1970s, was never validated in a sample containing enough older adults, and systematically underestimates the maximum in people over about 40. Tanaka and colleagues addressed this in 2001 with a meta-analysis of 351 studies covering 18,712 people, cross-validated in a further 514 measured in the laboratory, and arrived at 208 − 0.7 × age. It is the better formula and it is what serious sources use.

But no formula fixes the real problem, which is individual scatter. Maximum heart rate varies between people of the same age with a standard deviation of around 10 to 12 beats per minute. That means roughly a third of people sit more than 10 beats from any age-based estimate, and a meaningful minority sit more than 20 away. For a 40-year-old, '220 minus age' predicts 180 while the plausible true range spans something like 160 to 200: wide enough that zones built on the estimate may not correspond to the physiology they are named after. The formula is a starting point, not a measurement.

If the number matters to your training, measure it rather than calculate it. The most practical approach for most people is to stop guessing and read it off accumulated data: wearables record the highest rate seen across months of hard sessions, and the top of that record is usually closer to the truth than any equation. A deliberate field test, a thorough warm-up followed by progressively harder efforts to genuine exhaustion, gets closer still, at the cost of being genuinely unpleasant and requiring real motivation to reach a true maximum. Anyone with known heart disease, symptoms, or significant cardiovascular risk factors should not do an all-out test without medical advice first.

There is also a good case for sidestepping the number altogether. Heart-rate reserve, which anchors zones to your measured resting heart rate as well as your maximum, is less sensitive to error at the top. And the intensity anchors that do not need a maximum at all, the talk test, rating of perceived exertion, or a measured lactate or ventilatory threshold, are often more useful in practice, because they track how hard the work actually is on the day rather than how hard a formula predicted it would be.

Does getting fitter raise your maximum heart rate?
No. Maximum heart rate is set largely by age and genetics and is not a fitness measure. What training changes is everything underneath it — a lower resting heart rate, more blood pumped per beat, and much more work sustainable at any given heart rate. Two people of the same age can share a maximum and have completely different fitness.
Is a higher maximum heart rate better?
No, it carries no advantage. It reflects your age and your individual physiology, not your capability. A high maximum is not a sign of fitness and a low one is not a limitation — VO₂max, lactate threshold and resting heart rate tell you about fitness, and maximum heart rate simply calibrates the scale your zones are drawn on.
Is it dangerous to reach your maximum heart rate?
For a healthy person with no cardiovascular disease, briefly reaching maximum during hard exercise is normal and not inherently harmful. The caution applies to all-out maximal testing in anyone with known heart disease, symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness out of proportion to effort or blackouts, or significant risk factors — that group should speak to a clinician first rather than self-testing.
