Metabolic stress

The build-up of metabolites during hard training — the source of the burn and the pump.

Metabolic stress describes the accumulation of by-products such as lactate, hydrogen ions and inorganic phosphate inside a working muscle, along with the cell swelling and restricted blood flow that come with sustained contraction. Subjectively it is the burn and the pump.

It matters because it was long proposed as one of the primary drivers of hypertrophy alongside mechanical tension. The evidence has since moved: mechanical tension looks like the dominant signal, and metabolic stress is now generally seen as a secondary contributor at best, possibly acting indirectly by increasing motor-unit recruitment as the set gets hard.

In practice this means the burn is a sign that a set is getting close to failure, not a target in its own right. Training designed purely to chase it — endless light high-rep work — tends to underperform training that also loads the muscle meaningfully.
