Progressive overload
Gradually increasing the demand on a muscle over time so it keeps adapting.
Progressive overload is the principle that the body adapts to the demand you place on it, so the demand has to keep rising for the adaptation to continue. Most people picture it as adding weight to the bar, and weight is only one of the dials.
It matters because a stimulus your body has already met is no longer a stimulus. Training that never gets harder maintains what you have, which is a perfectly good goal, but it will not build anything new. This is the principle underneath every programme that works, whatever it calls itself.
The dials, roughly in the order most people should reach for them: more reps at the same weight, then more weight, then more hard sets, then a fuller range of motion, then better control of the lowering phase, then shorter rest, then an extra session a week. Adding weight while the range of motion quietly shrinks is not overload, it is bookkeeping.
The usual practical method is double progression. Pick a rep range, say 8 to 12. Add reps session by session until every set hits the top of the range with good form, then add the smallest load increment available and start again at the bottom. It removes the guesswork about when to jump, which is where most self-programmed training goes wrong. Our double progression planner runs that arithmetic.
Progress is not linear and expecting it to be is what breaks people. A beginner may add load weekly, an intermediate monthly, and an experienced lifter may spend a year adding a handful of reps. When the numbers stop moving, the answer is usually more total hard sets, better sleep and more food, in that order, rather than more effort per set.
The evidence sits underneath the principle rather than on top of it. Overload itself is too fundamental to trial against a control, but what trials do show is that growth tracks weekly hard sets and proximity to failure, which are the two things a progression scheme is really managing.
Planned backing off is part of it too. A deload week, or simply repeating a week rather than pushing it, lets accumulated fatigue clear so the next block has somewhere to go. Overload is a direction of travel across months, not a rule that every session must beat the last.
