The idea that appetite is driven by protein, so you keep eating until protein needs are met.
The protein leverage hypothesis proposes that humans regulate intake to hit a protein target more strongly than an energy target. If the diet is dilute in protein, total intake rises until enough protein has been consumed — and the extra energy comes along for the ride.
It matters as one of the more coherent explanations for why highly processed diets promote overeating: as protein falls as a percentage of calories, the amount of food needed to reach the same protein rises. Controlled feeding studies have found the predicted pattern, and the hypothesis is taken seriously, though the size of the effect and the mechanism are still debated.
In practice the actionable version is well supported regardless of the theory: getting adequate protein reliably reduces spontaneous energy intake in feeding trials. It is one of the few dietary levers that lowers hunger and improves body composition at the same time.
