The main form of fat carried in your blood.

Triglycerides are the main form in which fat is stored and transported: three fatty acids attached to a glycerol backbone. Almost all the fat in your food and in your fat tissue is in this form, and the level in your blood is a standard part of any lipid panel.

They matter because raised fasting triglycerides are a marker of metabolic trouble more than of dietary fat. They rise with insulin resistance, excess weight around the middle, high alcohol intake, uncontrolled diabetes and diets high in refined carbohydrate and sugar, and they are one of the five components of metabolic syndrome.

That surprises people who expect a fat number to be about eating fat. Carbohydrate in excess of what you need is converted to triglycerides by the liver, which is why cutting refined carbohydrate and alcohol usually moves this marker faster than cutting dietary fat does.

They are also the most food sensitive number on a lipid panel, which is why fasting matters more here than for cholesterol. A triglyceride level measured a few hours after a meal can be substantially higher than the fasting value and cannot be read against fasting thresholds.

Very high levels are a different problem from moderately raised ones. Moderate elevation is mainly a risk marker read alongside the rest of the panel; severe elevation carries a direct risk of pancreatitis and needs medical management rather than lifestyle patience.

They respond well and fast. Weight loss, reduced alcohol, less refined carbohydrate, more oily fish and regular aerobic exercise all lower them, often visibly within weeks, which makes this one of the more rewarding markers to work on.

In practice, get them measured fasted, read them alongside HDL and the rest of the panel, and treat a raised value as a metabolic signal rather than a verdict on your last meal.

Where your own result would sit

Most people reading this page are holding a blood-test report with this marker on it, and the question they arrived with is whether their number is normal. A reference interval says where most results from a healthy population fall; a guideline threshold is where a clinical body draws a line for a decision. Neither is a target, and a result on the wrong side of one is not a diagnosis: the same number can be unremarkable in one person and worth looking into in another, which is why the clinician who ordered the test reads it against your history rather than against a list.
