Wearing a Glucose Monitor Without Diabetes: What You'll Actually Learn

A useful curiosity with an unclear health benefit — and a few specific ways it misleads.

What this is

Over-the-counter continuous glucose monitors are now sold directly to people without diabetes. They are genuinely interesting devices: fourteen days of readings tell you things a fasting test cannot, like how your own breakfasts compare and what a bad night's sleep does to the next morning.

What the evidence does not yet support is that any of that changes your health. Systematic reviews of CGM outside diabetes reach the same conclusion each time — plausible as a feedback tool, thin evidence, unclear effect on outcomes.

  • It reveals your own between-meal and between-day variation

    This part is straightforwardly true and the reason the devices are compelling. Individual responses to the same meal differ substantially.

  • Short-term behaviour change while wearing one

    Silver· human data

    Feedback devices tend to change behaviour while worn. Whether anything persists after the sensor comes off is barely studied.

  • Improved metabolic or cardiovascular outcomes

    Unproven

    Not demonstrated in people without diabetes. Reviews say the data are scarce and the outcome effect unclear.

  • Its "normal range" tells you whether a food is bad for you

    Not supported

    There is no agreed reference range for people without diabetes, so app targets are product decisions, not clinical thresholds. Sensors also read interstitial fluid with a lag, and compression while sleeping produces false lows.

What this means in practice

  • Decide in advance what question you're answering — "does my usual lunch leave me flat at 3pm?" is answerable; "is my metabolism healthy?" isn't.
  • Compare your own days against each other, not against an app's target band.
  • Expect artefacts: sensor lag, first-day noise, and pressure-induced overnight dips.

The honest summary

Worth a fortnight if you're curious and can hold the data lightly. Not worth treating as a diagnostic, and not a substitute for an HbA1c if you're genuinely concerned.
