Blood Panels: What's Worth Knowing

A short list of markers that change decisions, and why "optimal ranges" are usually somebody's marketing.

What this is

Reference ranges are typically built from the middle 95% of a reference population, which means roughly one in twenty healthy people falls outside any given range by definition. Order twenty markers and an out-of-range result is close to inevitable. That's arithmetic, not illness — and it's the main reason wide panels generate anxiety and follow-up rather than clarity.

"Optimal range" is a separate thing again. Narrower bands sold by private providers and longevity clinics are usually not derived from outcome data; they're a marketing framework that reclassifies healthy people as suboptimal and, conveniently, in need of something.

What the evidence says

  • Blood pressure, HbA1c and a lipid panel change management decisions

    These feed directly into cardiovascular risk assessment and treatment thresholds in UK practice. They're cheap, evidence-based and often already in your record.

  • Full blood count, ferritin, thyroid and liver tests are useful for specific symptoms

  • Wide panels in asymptomatic people generate false positives

  • Trends over time are more informative than single readings

What this means in practice

  • Start with what you already have — most adults have had bloods done and don't know the numbers.
  • Have a question before you have a test. "I'm exhausted" is a question; "let's see everything" isn't.
  • Take unexpected results to a GP rather than to a supplement.

  • Get blood pressure checked. It's free, it changes management, and it's the most neglected number on this page.

When to see a doctor

  • Any result flagged urgent by a laboratory — contact a clinician promptly.
  • Unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or persistent fever with abnormal bloods.
  • Anaemia or iron deficiency, which always needs a cause found rather than just treating.

The honest summary

A handful of markers change what anyone does: blood pressure, HbA1c, lipids, plus symptom-driven tests. Wide asymptomatic panels mostly generate follow-up, and "optimal ranges" are usually a sales device.
