DSIP

Named in 1977 for an effect on sleep that half a century of subsequent research has failed to reproduce consistently.
What it is
DSIP, delta sleep-inducing peptide, was isolated from rabbit brain in the 1970s and named for the delta-wave sleep it appeared to induce when infused. It has been studied intermittently ever since and has never become a medicine anywhere.

A nine-amino-acid peptide. Sold online as a research chemical.
Proposed mechanism
Originally proposed to act directly on sleep-regulating centres in the brain. Later work has suggested effects on stress hormones and pain signalling, without settling on a clear mechanism.
Claimed benefits
Deeper sleep, reduced stress, pain relief, and help with withdrawal from alcohol or opioids.
What the evidence shows
Unproven· mixed evidence. The effect it is named for has proved difficult to reproduce. Human studies have been small, inconsistent and often unable to distinguish its effect from placebo, and it is not clear that a peptide of this size reaches the brain in useful amounts when injected peripherally.
Fifty years of research without a replicated primary result is itself the finding. The small studies in chronic pain and withdrawal are interesting and were never followed up at scale, which is usually what happens when early results do not hold.

Not a licensed medicine anywhere. Sold as an unregulated research chemical. Anyone competing should check current WADA status directly.
Known risks & unknowns
Short-term studies report few adverse effects, but total human exposure in the literature is small. For anyone actually struggling to sleep, the interventions with real evidence — consistent timing, light exposure, and cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia — will do considerably more.
