In a study of 5520 adults aged 50 and over followed for 6 years, those with both abdominal obesity and vitamin D deficiency had 2.23 times the risk of death compared with those who had neither. Either condition alone was also associated with a raised risk.

What it shows: Suggestive rather than proof: researchers followed 5520 over-50s for 6 years instead of testing anything, so a big waist and low vitamin D may simply travel alongside other causes of poor health. It cannot show that fixing either one would lengthen life.Study · Diabetes Obes Metab
