Unbroken sitting, not total sitting time, tracked cancer deaths

Each additional hour spent sitting in one long stretch came with a 9% higher risk of cancer death, while hours broken up through the day carried no such signal. Trading one of those hours for light activity was associated with roughly 12% lower risk.

For you: If you sit for a living, this points at the length of your sitting bouts, not only the daily total, as the part worth interrupting.

What it shows: Worth taking seriously but it is not proof: researchers followed 91,292 UK adults wearing wrist monitors for a median of 12.38 years rather than testing anything on them, so healthier people may simply sit in shorter bursts. Sitting patterns came from a single week of monitor wear, which is a thin snapshot of a decade of habits.Study · PLoS Med
