GLP-1 drugs linked to no excess cancer risk in pooled data
Pooling observational studies of adults with type 2 diabetes, users of GLP-1 receptor agonists had a modestly lower overall cancer risk (hazard ratio 0.86) rather than any excess, with significant reductions for pancreatic, colorectal, endometrial, ovarian, hepatocellular, oesophageal and gastric cancers, and no association either way for thyroid, breast, kidney or prostate cancer.
What it shows: Meta-analysis built almost entirely on observational studies in adults with type 2 diabetes, with substantial heterogeneity, a borderline pooled result and essentially no direct mechanistic validation: it cannot establish that the drugs prevent cancer.Systematic review · Front Oncol
