The Deadlifting Grandma: 'I'm a world champion'
Martine Barons of Stratford-upon-Avon began lifting during lockdown, after a seminar suggested women going through menopause should swap some running for strength work. A colleague at the University of Warwick, who is also a personal trainer, taught her to deadlift and immediately saw promise. Two and a half years later, the 65-year-old known as The Deadlifting Grandma has won the AWPC World Powerlifting Championships in the 65 to 85 age group, her third world title. She credits hard work and dedication, says her physique has transformed, and reckons her body feels at least 20 years younger.
For you: Worth knowing that serious strength sport is open to complete beginners in their sixties, and that menopause is one reason some women are trading miles for barbells.
