Menopausal Hormone Therapy May Ease Severe Mood Symptoms

After roughly 4.5 months on systemic hormone therapy, women's psychological symptom scores for depressive mood, irritability, anxiety and mental exhaustion improved by a mean of 2.7 points, and the proportion with severe mood symptoms dropped from 62.3% to 24.6%. The women who started with the worst symptoms improved the most, and sleep scores lifted too. Because this was a retrospective look at women who chose the therapy, it shows an association rather than proof that the hormones caused the change, but the improvements held regardless of antidepressant use, mental health history, menopause stage, race or age.
