New Research On Muscle Cramping
The classic explanation for cramp, dehydration and lost electrolytes, took another hit in a study of ultra-trail runners. The nine athletes who cramped had lost no more body mass, and had sodium levels no lower, than those who stayed cramp-free. What did separate them was higher post-race creatine kinase, a sign of greater muscle fatigue and damage. Runners who regularly strength trained their lower limbs were also less likely to cramp, adding to the growing evidence that fatigue, not fluid, is the stronger explanation.
