How fast you walk and how hard you grip predict how long you live

Pooled community data linked the weakest grip quarter with a 1.67 times higher risk of death from any cause, and the slowest walkers carried 2.87 times the risk of the fastest. Four simple physical tests turned out to be consistent mortality predictors.

What it shows: A strong and consistent association, not proof that training your grip extends life: the pooled studies followed people rather than testing anything on them, and most walking, chair rise and balance data came from people over 70, though grip strength predicted death in younger groups too.Meta-analysis · BMJ
