Fast lifting builds more leg power after 50 than slow grinding

Pooling 12 trials in adults aged 50 and over, resistance training reliably added lower-body power, and training with fast, explosive reps beat traditional slower lifting for power gains. Training volume shaped the result too.

For you: A reason to think about rep speed, not just the load on the bar, if keeping leg power after 50 is your goal.

What it shows: Solid pooled evidence from 12 trials in adults aged 50 and over, though the average gain was small to moderate. How fast people lifted and how much training they did changed the size of the benefit, so the headline figure hides real variation.Meta-analysis · Sports Med
