Violent games left players no more aggressive, even when stressed first
Stressing participants with a punishing mental arithmetic task, then handing them a violent game and an incompetent partner, produced no measurable rise in aggression in this single experiment. The researchers had expected stress to matter more than game content; in this setting, neither did.
For you: If you assume a violent game plus a bad day makes people snappier, this experiment found no such effect, though one lab test does not close the question.
What it shows: A useful null, but a modest one: a single lab experiment using a staged partner and a reaction time measure of aggression, and the abstract never says how many people took part. Aggression measured in a lab is also a step removed from how people behave outside one.Study · Trends Psychol
