‘Tactical athletes’ get new guidance for cardiovascular fitness

Firefighters, EMTs, police officers, military pilots and astronauts put their bodies through demands few competitive athletes ever face, and their fitness can decide whether other people live or die. Recognised as tactical athletes since the early 2000s, they have now received dedicated heart-care guidance from the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. The recommendations cover how clinicians should evaluate these workers, whose careers place heavy and varied loads on the body. The stakes are hard to overstate: cardiovascular disease is the leading duty-related cause of death in this population.

For you: If your work puts your body on the line, worth knowing that cardiology now treats that work like sport, with dedicated heart guidance to match.
