Foam rollers and massage sticks are fixtures of gym floors and physiotherapy clinics, sold largely on the promise that self-massage speeds recovery after hard training. Exercise that damages muscle leaves behind soreness, stiffness, swelling and a temporary drop in strength, so anything that genuinely shortens that window would be valuable to anyone who trains. Individual trials on rolling have been small and inconsistent, which is exactly the situation where pooling results helps. This review asked whether rolling or stick massage actually beats doing nothing for those recovery markers.

The authors searched five databases, with the last update in February 2021, for clinical trials in healthy adults comparing foam roller or stick massage against a non-intervention control after a protocol designed to induce muscle damage. Five studies qualified, covering 151 participants, 136 of them men. Risk of bias was assessed with Cochrane tools, and the included trials were judged to carry moderate to high risk overall. Muscle soreness results were pooled statistically, while range of motion, swelling and maximal voluntary isometric contraction were synthesised qualitatively.
What they found
Massage made no significant difference to muscle soreness at any measured point: immediately after exercise, or at 24, 48, 72 or 96 hours. What it means for you
If rolling is part of your routine because it feels good or helps you wind down after a session, nothing here argues against that. If you roll specifically to recover faster, this pooled evidence gives no sign it does that job, across soreness, flexibility, swelling or strength.
