Why it matters

Depression among college students is common, and medication is far from an automatic answer given its potential for adverse reactions. That has pushed attention toward non-pharmacological options such as exercise and psychological practices, which carry few side effects and can be adopted independently. The problem is that nobody has been sure which non-drug strategy works best for this age group. This review set out to pool the trial evidence on three candidates: aerobic exercise, traditional Chinese exercises and meditation.

What they did

The authors searched electronic databases up to September 15, 2019, and also reviewed reference lists to capture both published and unpublished studies from the databases' inception. After quality evaluation and data extraction, 44 original studies of college students met the inclusion criteria. A random-effects meta-analysis combined the results, expressing each intervention's effect on depressive symptoms as a standardised mean difference against control conditions.

What they found

All three interventions meaningfully reduced depressive symptoms. Aerobic exercise showed an effect of 0.53 standard deviations, traditional Chinese exercises 0.42, and meditation 0.51, all statistically significant and all in the moderate range. The studies within each category disagreed with each other considerably, which widens the uncertainty around those figures. The authors also note that aerobic exercise appeared to have a better effect on anxiety and stress, while traditional Chinese exercise appeared better for stress specifically.

Where it fits

The finding is consistent with the broader literature showing that movement and contemplative practices improve mood, and it usefully extends that picture to a student population and to three distinct approaches within a single pooled analysis. What it cannot do is crown a winner: the effects overlap and the trials varied widely in results and quality. For a student, or anyone who identifies with one, this is a reason to treat a regular run, a gentle traditional movement practice or a meditation habit as genuine mood tools rather than fluffy extras. Since all three delivered moderate benefits and none clearly beat the others, enjoyment and consistency become the deciding factors rather than any technical superiority. The uncertainty in the numbers means expectations should stay realistic: helpful, not transformative, and best judged over weeks of actually doing it.
