Why it matters
Chronic inflammation has been classified as one of the most important threats to health, and food-based ways of lowering it attract enormous interest. Tart cherry, best known in sport for its use around hard training, has been suggested to reduce circulating inflammatory mediators more generally. Whether that holds up outside the gym — in everyday, non-exercise settings — is a separate question from its recovery reputation. This meta-analysis pooled the randomised trials to establish what tart cherry does to three key inflammation markers in adult participants.
What they did
The authors searched PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Scopus and ClinicalTrials.gov up to May 2022 for English-language randomised clinical trials of tart cherry in adults, deliberately excluding exercise-recovery trials. Ten RCTs met the criteria. For each, they calculated effect sizes from the mean change from baseline and its standard deviation in both intervention and comparison groups, then pooled the results with a DerSimonian and Laird random-effects model, reporting according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The outcomes were C-reactive protein, interleukin-6 and tumour necrosis factor-alpha.
What they found
Tart cherry significantly reduced plasma C-reactive protein compared with comparison groups — a weighted mean difference of -0.55 mg/L, with a 95% confidence interval of -1.03 to -0.06 and a p-value of 0.029. Interleukin-6, by contrast, did not change significantly: the pooled difference was 0.08 pg/mL, with a confidence interval spanning -0.02 to 0.17. TNF-α was evaluated in only three of the trials and likewise showed no significant effect. On this evidence, the anti-inflammatory case for tart cherry rests on CRP alone.
Where it fits
This analysis separates tart cherry's general anti-inflammatory claims from its exercise-recovery reputation, and the answer is more modest than the enthusiasm: one of three inflammatory markers moved. A CRP reduction of 0.55 mg/L is real but modest, and the null results for IL-6 and TNF-α — the latter based on just three trials — leave the broader anti-inflammatory story unproven. Open questions include whether particular doses, durations or populations would show more, and whether a CRP change of this size carries clinical meaning.
What it means for you
If you take tart cherry hoping to dampen inflammation generally, this is a reason to hold measured expectations: across ten trials it lowered CRP modestly and left IL-6 and TNF-α unchanged. It is also a useful example of how a supplement can have one genuine, specific effect without earning a sweeping 'anti-inflammatory' label. Anyone who tracks their own CRP through blood tests may find the size of the pooled effect a helpful benchmark for what a food-based intervention can realistically achieve.
