Why it matters

The authors followed standard systematic review guidelines and searched six databases for randomised controlled trials published between August 2009 and December 2016. Trials qualified if they enrolled healthy participants, used a physical activity intervention, measured working memory performance, and randomised people to groups. From 7345 non-duplicate records, 15 studies made the cut: eight testing chronic, ongoing activity programmes and seven testing single acute bouts. Participants ranged from primary school children to retirement community members, and the activities ranged from cycling to yoga. The team assessed each study for bias and ran meta-analyses plus moderation analyses.
What they found
Pooling the chronic studies produced a significant but small improvement in working memory, whereas pooling the acute studies produced a trivial, non-significant result. Age and exercise intensity significantly moderated the findings, meaning the effect varied depending on who was exercising and how hard. Whether trials concealed allocation, blinded assessors, or ran longer or shorter interventions did not change the picture. Most included studies carried low or unclear risk of bias, though the trials varied considerably in their cohorts, interventions and memory tests.

This review fills a gap, since most systematic reviews in the area concentrate on cognitively impaired populations rather than healthy ones. It complicates the popular idea that one workout gives an immediate cognitive edge, at least for working memory, while supporting the broader case for sustained training. The authors flag real limits: the acute studies used a diverse array of working memory instruments, sample sizes were unequal, and age groups differed. They call for large, high-quality randomised trials before stronger, more generalisable conclusions can be drawn.

For a healthy person hoping exercise will sharpen the mind, this is a reason to think in terms of a habit sustained over weeks and months rather than a single session before a demanding task. The improvement from regular activity was small, so it is a supporting argument for training you would do anyway rather than a promise of transformation.
