Why it matters

Cold water immersion and contrast water therapy, which alternates hot and cold, have become standard practice in high-level team sport, yet athletes initially adopted them on anecdote rather than evidence. As recovery research has grown, general reviews have appeared, but none had focused specifically on hydrotherapy for recovery from team sport, where repeated sprints, jumps and collisions create distinctive demands. Knowing whether these methods actually restore performance, and which perceptions they change, matters for how teams spend their limited recovery time. This review narrowed the question to exactly that setting.

What they did

The authors ran a structured keyword search across four databases, including SPORTDiscus, AMED, CINAHL and MEDLINE, for studies of cold water immersion and contrast water therapy after team sport. Twenty-three peer-reviewed articles covering 606 participants met the criteria. Data were extracted and standardised mean differences calculated, with pooled analyses run under a random-effect model and disagreement between studies formally assessed. Outcomes included countermovement jump, sprint performance, and athletes' own ratings of fatigue and muscle soreness at various time points after play.

What they found

Cold water immersion was beneficial for recovery at 24 hours after team sport, on both countermovement jump and all-out sprint performance, and helped perceptions of fatigue at 72 hours. Contrast water therapy helped perceived fatigue at 48 hours but was not beneficial for neuromuscular recovery. Cold water immersion was not beneficial for recovery of accumulated sprinting. Crucially, neither method improved perceptions of muscle soreness after team sport, the very outcome athletes most often use ice baths to address.

Where it fits

This sharpens the general recovery literature into a team sport verdict: cold water immersion earns its place for next-day neuromuscular performance and later-week fatigue, while contrast therapy's case is weaker and limited to how tired players feel. The soreness result complicates the popular story, since easing aching muscles is the most common justification for the ice bath ritual. Open questions remain about optimal timing, temperature and duration, none of which this pooling could settle. It also says nothing about individual sports or resistance training contexts.

What it means for you

If you play team sport and use ice baths, this is a reason to think of them as a tool for restoring next-day jump and sprint performance and blunting fatigue across the week, rather than a cure for soreness. The finding that perceived muscle soreness did not improve with either method is a useful correction to the most common belief about cold water. Contrast baths showed less to recommend them, helping only how fatigued players felt at one time point. As always, pooled averages describe groups, and individual responses will vary.
