Ranked by effect, severe continuous restriction was the most effective for weight loss, with a mean difference of 11.50 kg, followed by alternate-day fasting at 5.07 kg and moderate continuous restriction at 6.09 kg. Body measurements, blood pressure, blood lipids and glycaemic profiles told a similar story. One notable divergence: in subgroup analysis, the weight-loss effects of intermittent fasting, but not continuous restriction, rebounded after 12 weeks.
