Why it matters
Physical inactivity is among the dominant risk factors for poor health in later life, and the hardest problem is rarely designing an exercise programme but getting older adults to keep doing one. Dance is often suggested as a moderate-intensity activity people genuinely enjoy, which makes it a candidate for sustaining activity where gym prescriptions fail. What has been less clear is whether dancing delivers the same physiological returns as conventional exercise. This review pooled randomised trials to compare dance against exercising and non-exercising comparators on cardiorespiratory fitness, quality of life and muscle strength.
What they did
The authors followed PERSiST guidance, registered the protocol with PROSPERO, and searched six databases including Medline, Embase, Scopus, Science Direct, the Cochrane Library and Web of Science for randomised controlled trials of any style of dance in older adults, published between 2015 and 2025. Seventeen trials qualified, together enrolling 1,881 participants, 72.85% of them women. The outcomes of interest were cardiorespiratory fitness, quality of life and muscle strength, and results were combined as standardised mean differences so that different tests across trials could be pooled together.
What they found
Dance and conventional exercise were statistically indistinguishable on the two headline outcomes. Cardiorespiratory fitness did not differ significantly between the groups, though the underlying studies disagreed with each other considerably, and quality of life showed no significant difference either, with the studies agreeing closely on that point. The surprise came on muscle strength, where the pooled result significantly favoured dance over exercise, and by a large margin, a standardised mean difference of 1.64. The authors conclude that dance is comparable to exercise for fitness and quality of life, and more effective for strength.
Where it fits
Dance has usually been framed as a gentler, more social alternative to formal exercise, valued mainly for adherence and enjoyment rather than physiological adaptation. This pooled analysis pushes back on that framing: on fitness and quality of life it held its own against structured exercise, and on strength it came out ahead. The strength finding deserves caution, since a pooled advantage this large is unusual and the trials varied in dance style, comparator and how strength was measured. It also leaves open which styles, intensities and durations drive the effect, and whether the results generalise to men, who were a minority of participants.
What it means for you
For anyone in later life, or helping a parent stay active, the practical message is that a dance class is not a consolation prize for people who will not go to the gym. Across these trials it delivered fitness and quality-of-life outcomes comparable to conventional exercise, and the pooled strength results actually favoured it. Since the biggest predictor of benefit from any activity is whether you keep showing up, evidence that an enjoyable option performs this well is genuinely useful information rather than a soft sell.
