Why it matters

Protein supplementation is one of the most common strategies for improving body composition and exercise performance, and whey has long dominated both the research and the shelves. Beef protein has been gaining popularity as an alternative, but popularity is not evidence. The practical question for anyone buying a tub is whether the source of the protein changes the outcome, or whether a supplement is simply a vehicle for hitting a higher daily protein intake. This review set out to compare beef protein directly against whey and against no protein supplementation at all, in the context of exercise training.

The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials that combined exercise training with beef protein, whey protein or no protein supplementation. Primary outcomes were body composition and exercise performance, with total protein intake and haematological measures as secondary endpoints. Seven studies met the inclusion criteria, covering 270 participants in total, and effects were pooled as standardised mean differences across the trials.

What they found

Head to head, beef and whey were indistinguishable: no differences emerged for total protein intake, lean body mass or fat mass. Against no protein supplementation, beef protein delivered clear wins, significantly increasing total daily protein intake, lean body mass and lower-limb muscle strength. Not everything moved, though: fat mass, upper-limb strength and total iron intake showed no significant differences between beef protein and no supplementation, so the benefits were concentrated in lean mass and lower-body strength rather than spread across every outcome.

Where it fits

The result fits a broader pattern in sports nutrition research suggesting that total protein intake drives adaptation more than the specific source, provided the protein is of good quality. It extends the whey-centric evidence base by showing a newer alternative performs equivalently in trials, rather than merely in marketing copy. Open questions remain about longer interventions, different training populations and whether the iron content of beef-derived supplements has any meaningful effect, since iron intake did not differ significantly here.

If you already use whey and it works for you, there is nothing here to prompt a change.
