Why it matters

Time-restricted eating, where all food is squeezed into a set daily window, has become one of the most popular routes to weight loss because it swaps calorie counting for clock watching. An obvious question follows: if you are already restricting when you eat, does also restricting how much you eat buy you anything extra? And beneath the headline weight numbers sits a second question that matters just as much, which is what kind of tissue is actually being lost, fat or fat-free mass. This review pooled the randomised trial evidence to answer both.

What they did

The researchers systematically searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science and Scopus for randomised controlled trials testing time-restricted eating alone or combined with energy restriction against comparison diets. Twenty trials with 1242 participants met the criteria. They pooled changes in body weight, fat mass, fat-free mass, body mass index and waist circumference, expressing results as weighted mean differences. Subgroup analyses compared time-restricted eating against no restriction, and the combined approach against energy restriction alone.

What they found

Time-restricted eating on its own reduced body weight by 1.59 kg and fat mass by 0.93 kg compared with no restriction, while adding it to energy restriction produced losses of 0.94 kg in weight and 1.13 kg in fat mass over energy restriction alone. Waist circumference fell by 2.11 cm and 2.20 cm respectively, and body mass index dropped by 0.63 and 0.42 units. Fat mass percentage did not significantly change in either comparison. Both approaches also reduced fat-free mass, by 0.58 kg and 0.56 kg, so not all the lost weight was fat.

Where it fits

This pooled analysis confirms that time-restricted eating produces real, if modest, weight loss, in line with earlier reviews. Its more useful contribution is the comparison nobody tends to make: layering calorie restriction on top of a restricted eating window added no meaningful benefit over calorie restriction by itself. The consistent dip in fat-free mass echoes concerns raised by previous analyses of fasting-style diets. Open questions remain about who loses fat versus lean tissue, and whether resistance training or higher protein intakes change that balance.

What it means for you

If a shorter eating window suits your life, this is evidence it can shift weight on its own, without a formal calorie target attached. It is also a reason not to assume that stacking both strategies will accelerate results, since the combination added nothing measurable here. The fat-free mass finding is worth sitting with: some of what the scale loses on these protocols is not fat. That makes body composition, not just body weight, the number worth watching.
