Why it matters

Standard sleep advice recommends moderate-intensity exercise while discouraging hard training close to bedtime, on the assumption that an evening high-intensity session leaves the body too aroused to sleep well. Yet that warning has rarely been tested against pooled experimental evidence. With many people only able to train after work, whether the caution is justified matters practically. This review set out to determine whether acute or regular high-intensity evening exercise actually disrupts the sleep of healthy adults who normally sleep well.

What they did

The authors searched six databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science, from inception to 31st May 2021 for experimental trials in healthy good sleepers aged 18 to 50, spanning both sedentary and physically fit people. Sleep had to be assessed objectively by polysomnography or actigraphy, or subjectively, after evening high-intensity exercise compared with a no-exercise control. Risk of bias was assessed with the revised Cochrane tool. Fifteen acute evening exercise studies with a total of 194 participants were included in the meta-analysis.

What they found

Acute evening high-intensity exercise ending 0.5 to 4 hours before bedtime reduced rapid eye movement sleep by 2.34% compared with no exercise. No other significant sleep changes occurred: onset, duration and the rest of sleep architecture were essentially untouched. Regular evening high-intensity training did not disrupt nighttime sleep either. The authors' overall conclusion was that acute high-intensity exercise performed 2 to 4 hours before bedtime does not disrupt the nighttime sleep of healthy young and middle-aged adults.

Where it fits

This directly challenges the common advice that vigorous exercise in the evening should be avoided for the sake of sleep, at least for people who already sleep well. The small REM reduction is the one measurable cost, and its practical meaning is unclear. Open questions remain about people with existing sleep problems, sessions ending within half an hour of bed, and older adults, none of whom this evidence covers. For healthy good sleepers, though, the blanket warning looks unsupported.

What it means for you

If the evening is the only time you can train hard, this is a reason not to fear for your sleep, provided the session wraps up a couple of hours before bed. The pooled evidence found no meaningful disruption to how quickly people fell asleep or how well they slept, only a small reduction in REM sleep. The findings apply to healthy adults aged 18 to 50 who sleep well in the first place, so anyone with an existing sleep problem is outside what this review can speak to.
