Why it matters
How well muscle receives and uses oxygen shapes how long an older person can walk, climb and carry before fatigue sets in, and it is one of the physiological qualities that changes with age. The authors searched PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct and Scopus with no date limits, looking for randomised controlled trials in which participants with a mean age of at least 65 completed an exercise programme and had their muscle oxygenation assessed. From 1238 articles identified, 7 trials qualified, together covering 370 older adults with an average age of 68.7, some healthy and some with peripheral arterial disease. The programmes spanned resistance training, endurance training and walking sessions, ran from 3 to 24 months, and involved 2 to 6 sessions per week at varying intensities.
What they found
Each training style improved a different facet of muscle oxygenation. In healthy older adults, long-term resistance training enhanced the muscles' capacity to extract oxygen, along with the regulation of blood vessels and the function of the vessel lining. Endurance training improved blood flow through the smallest vessels, the matching of oxygen delivery to oxygen use, the muscles' oxidative capacity and their oxygen saturation. In older adults with peripheral arterial disease, walking sessions improved both oxygen availability and oxygen extraction. No single modality came out as superior overall; the benefit depended on the training type and the participants' clinical status.
Where it fits
