Why it matters

How often to train each muscle is one of the oldest arguments in the gym. Traditional splits hit each muscle once a week, while full-body advocates insist that more frequent stimulation drives more growth. Frequency is widely considered an important variable in the hypertrophic response to resistance training, yet individual studies have pointed in different directions. This meta-analysis set out to settle whether weekly training frequency itself changes how much muscle you build, or whether it only matters as a way of accumulating total work.

What they did

The authors systematically searched the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and SPORTDiscus databases for experimental studies comparing different weekly resistance training frequencies and measuring muscle growth. Twenty-five studies met the inclusion criteria. The analysis separated studies where total training volume was equated between the frequency conditions from those where it was not, and it also examined subgroups: direct measures of muscle growth, resistance-trained participants, and upper-body versus lower-body training.

What they found

On a volume-equated basis, there was no significant difference in hypertrophy between higher and lower training frequencies. That null held across every category examined: direct measures of growth, trained lifters, upper body and lower body. When volume was not equated, meta-regression showed a significant effect favouring higher frequencies, but even then the difference in magnitude between training once versus three or more times per week was modest. In short, frequency moved the needle only when it carried extra total work.

Where it fits

This strengthens the case that total volume, not how it is scheduled, is the primary driver of muscle growth, a position that had been building in the literature but lacked a pooled analysis of this breadth. It complicates the popular claim that frequent stimulation is inherently superior for hypertrophy. What it does not address is whether very high volumes become impractical to fit into a single session, or whether frequency matters for strength, recovery or adherence, which remain separate questions.

What it means for you

This is a reason to stop treating training frequency as a rule and start treating it as a preference. If a full-body routine three days a week suits your schedule, the evidence says it grows muscle as well as a once-a-week body-part split doing the same total work, and vice versa. The variable worth counting is weekly volume per muscle; how you slice it across the week appears to be yours to choose.
