Why it matters

The authors searched eight databases, including Chinese-language ones, from inception to March 2026 without language restrictions, looking for experimental studies that compared music-related conditions against no music or other non-musical controls during aerobic exercise. Two reviewers screened studies, extracted data and assessed risk of bias independently, with a third resolving disagreements. Fifteen studies with 339 physically active adults made the cut. The team pooled results for fixed-duration performance, time to exhaustion, perceived exertion, blood lactate and heart rate, then graded how much confidence each pooled result deserved.
What they found
The most consistent result was perceptual: exercisers reported lower ratings of perceived exertion with music, and this carried the highest certainty of any outcome in the review. Music was also associated with better performance in fixed-duration tests and with blood lactate around 0.86 mmol/L lower. Time to exhaustion looked dramatically longer with music, but the underlying studies disagreed with each other so severely that the authors rated that evidence very low certainty. Heart rate, notably, was not significantly affected, meaning the body appeared to work just as hard while the effort felt lighter.
