Why it matters

Most people who want to lose weight never see a dietitian or join a structured programme, so researchers have long looked for cheaper ways to deliver support at scale. Mobile phones are the obvious candidate: nearly everyone carries one, and text messages, apps and calls can prompt, track and coach without a clinic visit. The open question was whether interventions delivered this way actually move body weight, or whether they are simply convenient. This analysis set out to answer that by pooling every randomised trial available at the time.

What they did

The researchers searched electronic databases and reference lists for randomised controlled trials published up to 27 March 2014 that tested mobile phone interventions against a control group in overweight and obese adults. Fourteen trials met the eligibility criteria, covering 1,337 participants in total. Two investigators independently extracted the study details and outcomes, and net changes in weight-related measures between intervention and control groups were pooled using random-effects models. Subgroup analyses split the trials by duration and by intervention type.

What they found

Compared with control groups, mobile phone interventions were associated with a net weight change of 1.44 kg in favour of the intervention, and a net reduction in body mass index of 0.24 units. The associations were consistent across subgroups: trials shorter than six months showed a net change of 0.92 kg, while trials of six months or longer showed 1.85 kg. In other words, the effect was real across designs but modest in size everywhere it appeared.

Where it fits

This pooled analysis strengthened the case that phone-delivered support is more than a gimmick, since individual trials had been small and mixed. It also left plenty open: the evidence base predates the modern generation of apps and connected devices, and pooling different intervention types together cannot say which components, such as texting, tracking or coaching, do the work. Longer-term maintenance of the lost weight is another question the included trials could not settle.

What it means for you

If you are using an app or text-based programme to manage your weight, this is evidence that the approach can help rather than a promise of dramatic results. The honest sizing is an extra 1.44 kg over control conditions, which is meaningful but small against the scale of most weight-loss goals. It is also a reason to see the phone as a support tool that works alongside diet and activity changes, not as the ingredient that produces them on its own.
