The reviewers searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PEDro and Google Scholar for randomised or quasi-randomised trials comparing high-velocity power training with conventional low-velocity resistance training in people over 60 living in the community. Eleven trials involving 377 participants were identified. The primary outcomes were measures of function; secondary outcomes included balance, gait, strength, power, muscle volume and adverse effects, and results were pooled as effect sizes across trials.
What they found
The pooled effect size for follow-up values of functional outcomes was 0.32 in favour of power training (95% CI 0.06 to 0.57) — a small but statistically significant advantage. Other estimates were less decisive: the pooled effect for change values was 0.38 but with a wide confidence interval crossing zero (95% CI -0.51 to 1.28), and self-reported function from three studies favoured power training at 0.16, also non-significant (95% CI -0.17 to 0.49). The authors concluded power training is feasible for older people, but that no firm conclusion could be made about safety.

This meta-analysis supports the idea that movement velocity is a meaningful training variable in older age, not just load.
