Why it matters

Until this review, no synthesis of the literature had examined strength and muscle-building adaptations in an exclusively female population. That gap matters: without women-only evidence, it is impossible to say with confidence what training outcomes women should actually expect, or which programme variables such as frequency, volume and intensity drive their results. This review set out to characterise those adaptations and draw evidence-based conclusions for female training expectations.

What they did

The authors searched three electronic databases using terms for resistance training combined with females or women, identifying 14,067 articles, of which 24 studies met the inclusion criteria. Upper body strength was assessed in 15 studies, lower body strength in 19, and muscular hypertrophy in 15, with interventions lasting between 4 weeks and 12 months. Random-effects meta-analyses estimated the overall effect of training on strength and muscle size, and further analyses explored whether variables like training intensity, volume, frequency and participant age moderated the outcomes.

What they found

Resistance training produced large effects on both upper body strength (Hedges' g of 1.70) and lower body strength (1.40). After correcting for publication bias, a large effect remained for upper body strength (1.07) while lower body strength dropped to a medium effect (0.52). Muscle hypertrophy showed a medium effect (0.52). Training frequency and volume significantly influenced lower body strength, while frequency and sets per exercise moderated upper body strength; no variable significantly moderated hypertrophy. Supervised training outperformed unsupervised training for lower body strength, and there was a trend for younger participants to gain more upper body strength. Study quality was rated moderate.
