Why it matters
Running economy describes how much oxygen a runner burns to hold a given pace, and among well-matched competitors it can separate the podium from the pack. Elite endurance athletes already have highly developed aerobic engines, so squeezing out further improvement is difficult, and many runners and coaches have historically worried that lifting weights would add bulk or interfere with mileage. Whether structured strength work genuinely improves economy in runners who are already highly trained is therefore a question with real competitive stakes, and one this review set out to answer systematically.

The authors searched four databases, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, MEDLINE and CINAHL, for controlled trials in competitive middle- and long-distance runners. Studies had to involve runners with a VO2max above 60 ml per kg per minute, run a strength programme longer than 4 weeks, and measure running economy before and after. From 699 articles screened, five trials met the criteria, giving a combined sample of 93 high-level runners. Four of the five used low to moderate lifting intensities of 40-70% of one repetition maximum, with 2-4 lower-body exercises plus up to 200 jumps and 5-10 short sprints, performed 2-3 times per week for 8-12 weeks.
What they found
The pooled effect of strength training on running economy was large and beneficial, with a standardised mean difference of -1.42. That is a substantial effect for a population in which meaningful gains are usually hard to come by, since these runners were already competitive athletes with high aerobic capacity. The programmes achieving it were not extreme: modest loads, a handful of exercises, plyometric jumps and short sprints layered onto existing run training over 8-12 weeks. The review did not identify which single programme element mattered most, and with only five qualifying trials the evidence base remains narrow.
Where it fits
This pooled analysis strengthens the case that resistance and plyometric work belongs in endurance programmes, countering the older worry that lifting hurts distance runners. It is notable that the benefit appeared in high-level athletes, the group where improvements are hardest to find, which suggests the mechanism is not simply a beginner effect. Open questions remain: the optimal mix of heavy lifting, jumps and sprints is unresolved, the trials varied in design, and the review says nothing directly about race times, only about the oxygen cost of running.
What it means for you
For anyone who runs seriously, this is a reason to think strength and plyometric work can make running cheaper on the body rather than heavier, even at a high training level. The programmes studied were compact, a few lower-body exercises with jumps and sprints a couple of times a week, rather than bodybuilding-style volume. Because all 93 participants were competitive runners, the findings describe that population; recreational runners were not studied here, though there is little in the result to suggest the direction of effect would reverse.
