Why it matters

What they did
The researchers followed PRISMA guidelines and the Cochrane PICOS framework, searching eleven databases including Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE, PubMed and the Cochrane Library for randomised controlled trials published before September 2023. Thirty-three trials covering 3658 postmenopausal women were included, with study quality assessed against ROB2 and GRADE criteria. A network meta-analysis then compared five traditional Chinese fitness exercises, alone and combined with drug therapy, on bone mineral density measured at the lumbar spine, the femoral neck and Ward's triangle, ranking the options by probability of being most effective.

Taiji and Yijinjing were significantly superior to conventional rehabilitation for lumbar spine bone density. For the femoral neck, Baduanjin and Taiji outperformed conventional rehabilitation, and Taiji also came out ahead at Ward's triangle, a region of the hip. In the probability rankings, combinations with medication dominated: Baduanjin plus drugs ranked best for lumbar and femoral neck density, and Taiji plus drugs for Ward's triangle. Among the exercises alone, Taiji ranked highest for the lumbar spine and Ward's triangle, while Baduanjin led at the femoral neck.

This extends the evidence that mechanical loading through exercise supports bone into decidedly gentle territory, since these practices involve no jumping or heavy lifting.
