Why it matters

Almost every gym programme has an opinion on exercise order: compounds first, isolation last is the textbook rule. But whether that sequencing actually changes long-term results, rather than just how hard each set feels, has never been settled. If order shapes strength or muscle growth, it is a free programming lever that costs no extra time. If it does not, lifters can arrange sessions however they prefer. This review set out to pool everything tested on the question and give a clear prescription for how exercise order should be handled in resistance training programmes.

What they did

The researchers systematically searched four databases for studies that compared different exercise orders and tracked changes in dynamic muscular strength, muscle hypertrophy, or both. Eleven studies met the criteria, and each was rated good to excellent on a methodological quality checklist. The team then pooled the results in a meta-analysis, comparing sessions that ran from multi-joint to single-joint exercises against sessions run in the reverse order, and looked separately at strength outcomes and hypertrophy outcomes.

What they found

When all strength tests were considered together, order made no overall difference. The picture changed when the tests were split by exercise type: starting with multi-joint exercises produced larger strength gains in the multi-joint lifts, while starting with single-joint exercises produced larger strength gains in the single-joint lifts. In other words, strength improved most in whatever came first. For muscle hypertrophy, combining site-specific and indirect measures, there was no significant effect of order at all: both sequences produced similar growth.

Where it fits

The finding fits the broader principle that adaptations follow what you emphasise: the lifts given priority, freshest in the session, gain the most strength. It also pushes back on the idea that the classic compounds-first rule is essential for muscle growth, since hypertrophy came out the same either way. Open questions remain about how the pattern plays out over longer training periods, in highly trained lifters, and with more direct muscle measurements, since the pooled studies used a mix of site-specific and indirect methods.

What it means for you

If your main goal is muscle size, this is a reason to think exercise order is a matter of preference rather than a rule to obey. If your goal is strength on a particular lift, the evidence points to placing that lift at the start of the session, because gains concentrated in whatever was done first. It is also a reminder that programming advice framed as universal law sometimes matters only for specific goals, not all of them.
