Why it matters

The reviewers searched PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library from inception to August 2021 for randomised controlled trials that tested whey protein against comparison groups in women aged 55 years and above. Fourteen studies qualified for the systematic review and ten for the pooled analysis. Outcomes covered body composition, muscular strength, functional capacity and dietary intake. The key move was splitting the analysis into two subgroups: trials that combined whey with resistance training, and trials that gave whey on its own.

When whey was combined with lifting, supplementation significantly improved biceps curl strength and lower limb lean mass compared with placebo.
