Methodology
Three honest approximations chained together:
- Stride length ≈
0.415 × heightfor men,0.413 × heightfor women — the standard pedometry estimating factors. - Distance = steps × stride length.
- Energy via the walking MET for your chosen pace (Compendium codes
17170/17190/17200), using
kcal/min = MET × 3.5 × kg ÷ 200over the time the distance implies at that pace.
Each link adds error, which is why the page badges itself a rough estimate — the arithmetic is exact, the assumptions are averages.
Interpreting your result
Step-based calorie figures are most useful as a consistent daily signal rather than precise accounting. If your tracker says 9,000 steps every day and your weight is stable, that activity is already priced into your maintenance calories; a genuinely extra 5,000-step walk is worth roughly 150–250 kcal for most people.
Remember these calories include resting metabolism for the walking time — don't stack them on top of a TDEE that already reflects an active lifestyle.
Limitations
- Real stride length varies with pace, terrain, footwear and habit; counting your own steps over a measured 100 m beats the height factor.
- Phone and wrist trackers miscount steps in both directions.
- Walking uphill, on sand, or with load can double the energy cost — the walking METs assume firm, level ground.

Frequently asked questions
- How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?
- For most adults, somewhere between roughly 300 and 500 kcal depending on bodyweight, height and pace. This calculator shows the arithmetic behind that range rather than a single magic number.
- How is distance estimated from steps?
- Stride length is estimated at about 0.415 × height for men and 0.413 × height for women, then multiplied by your step count. Individual stride varies, which is one reason this is a rough estimate.
- Is 10,000 steps a day scientifically special?
- No — it began as a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing campaign. Research shows health benefits accumulating well before 10,000 and continuing beyond it; more movement is simply better than less.
- Do these calories include what I'd burn anyway?
- The MET values include your resting metabolism, so don't add the full figure on top of your TDEE if your activity level already accounts for daily walking.
