The generator builds the widely used ramp to a first work set:
empty bar × 10 → 40% × 5 → 60% × 3 → 80% × 1 → work set
Each percentage is then rounded to a weight your plates can actually build, using the same exact plate-combination search as our plate calculator, so a 40% set of 36 kg becomes the loadable 35 kg, never a fictional number. Warm-ups are always capped at or below the work weight.
Interpreting your result
The ramp does three jobs: raises muscle temperature (the ×10 bar set), grooves the movement pattern (the ×5 and ×3), and primes the nervous system for load (the ×1), all while keeping fatigue low enough that your work sets don't suffer. The reps deliberately fall as weight rises; adding extra reps at 80% costs performance without adding preparation.
The template suits most people most of the time. Lifters with heavy absolute loads often add a 90% single, and cold environments or long gaps between sessions justify an extra early set.
Limitations
- Percentages assume a barbell lift with meaningful load; bodyweight and isolation work needs less ceremony.
- The first heavy lift of the day needs the full ramp. Later lifts sharing muscles usually need only a feeder set or two.
- General preparation (a few minutes raising your heart rate, joint mobility where you're stiff) still belongs before the bar work.

- How should I warm up for barbell lifts?
- Ramp from the empty bar to your first work set in a few progressively heavier, progressively shorter sets. This tool uses bar ×10, then 40% ×5, 60% ×3 and 80% ×1 of your work weight.
- Why do warm-up reps decrease as weight increases?
- Early sets groove technique and raise tissue temperature; later sets prime the nervous system for heavy load without accumulating fatigue that would tax your work sets.
- Do I need more warm-up for heavier lifts?
- Stronger lifters often insert extra steps above 80% (e.g. 90% ×1) because their jumps are larger in absolute terms. Add a step if the last jump feels big; the percentages are a template, not a law.
- Should I warm up the same for every exercise?
- The first heavy movement of the day needs the full ramp. Later exercises sharing similar muscles usually need only one or two feeder sets.
