The three energy-providing nutrients: protein, carbohydrate and fat.
Macronutrients are the three nutrients the body needs in large amounts and which supply energy: protein, carbohydrate and fat. Protein and carbohydrate provide about 4 kcal per gram and fat about 9. Alcohol supplies roughly 7 kcal per gram and is not a nutrient at all, which is worth remembering when a diet appears to stop working at weekends.
They matter because the split shapes what happens inside a given calorie budget. Total intake decides whether weight goes up or down; the macronutrient breakdown influences how much of that change is muscle rather than fat, how training feels, and how easy the whole thing is to stick to.
Protein is the one to set first, because it has a target rather than a remainder. Roughly 1.6 g per kg of bodyweight a day is where the benefit for muscle plateaus in the meta-analytic data, and higher intakes are useful mainly for appetite control in a deficit.
Fat has a floor. Reference intakes put fat at 20 to 35% of energy, and going far below the bottom of that squeezes fat soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids for no return. Carbohydrate then takes whatever is left, and gets the largest share for anyone training hard, because it is the fuel intensity runs on.
The split matters less than the internet suggests, within reason. Trials comparing higher carbohydrate with higher fat diets at matched calories and protein find little difference in fat loss. Choose the balance you can eat consistently, which is a real criterion rather than a consolation prize.
Two mistakes recur. One is treating macros as a moral scoreboard rather than a plan, which turns eating into accountancy. The other is hitting the numbers with food that provides almost no fibre or micronutrients, which is technically compliant and nutritionally poor.
