RPERate of Perceived Exertion

A 1 to 10 scale for how hard a set felt, used to regulate training intensity.

RPE, rate of perceived exertion, rates how hard an effort felt. Lifting mostly uses a 1 to 10 scale anchored to reps left in the tank: RPE 10 means no more reps were possible, RPE 8 means roughly two were left. Endurance training often uses the older Borg 6 to 20 scale instead.

It matters because your capacity is not constant. Sleep, stress, food, illness and accumulated fatigue move what a given weight costs you on a given day, and a programme written in fixed percentages cannot see any of that. RPE lets the load follow the day.

It is the mirror of reps in reserve: RPE 10 is 0 RIR, RPE 9 is 1 RIR, and so on. Most hypertrophy work belongs somewhere around RPE 7 to 9, close enough to failure to recruit the large motor units without generating fatigue that costs the rest of the session.

Accuracy improves with practice, and beginners are consistently poor at it, usually underestimating how much they had left. That is not a reason to avoid it; it is a reason to calibrate occasionally by taking a set to genuine failure and comparing it with what you predicted.

Its weakness is honesty. On a bad day RPE can license doing less than you could, and on an ego day it can license grinding. Pairing it with a logbook, so the numbers have to move over months, keeps it useful.

It works best combined with load rather than instead of it. A programme that prescribes a weight range and an RPE target gets the structure of percentages and the flexibility of autoregulation.

In practice, aim for a specific RPE on working sets, record what the weight and reps actually were, and let our double progression planner handle when to add load.
